Welcome to The Becket School
The Becket Sixth is an outstanding sixth form, achieving the best results in the County (state schools) year on year and appears in The Times top 200 schools list each year. We are a caring and tolerant community in which staff and students work together. Well motivated students are welcomed and share a common aim with teachers: that of ensuring that these years are well spent and have a successful outcome.
For many students the Sixth Form represents two short but very special years of their lives. It is a crucial time which can place considerable pressures on the student; it can also be a time to discover the true satisfaction of learning, a time to make new friends and to find new interests and pursuits. Our first aim is to enable our students to fulfil their academic potential. But while we emphasise the importance of academic achievement, we see this as only one aspect of the development of the whole person.
For these reasons it is essential that the place of your choice should be one which holds out the best prospect for your academic success, but also one in which you will feel sufficiently happy and ‘at home’ to be able to work steadily towards your personal goals.
Mr J McGeachieHead Teacher
The Becket Sixth has much to offer: high quality teaching, individual guidance and an outstanding track record of A Level results and admission to university or further career training.
To this can be added the best features of both a school-based sixth form and of a more adult environment. Although the Becket Sixth is large, it is not so large as to be impersonal, it is a friendly, welcoming, energetic and hardworking community of young people.
The curriculum is well matched to the needs and aspirations of our students, who choose from a wide range of recognised AS and A2 level subjects, including those most valued by the established universities. The purposeful ethos and the excellent facilities promote an independent approach to learning. Progress is closely monitored and well-focused support is provided to help our students to obtain results of which they can be proud.
Over the years, those students who have completed their A Levels with us have left with very positive and happy memories of their time here.
The Becket Sixth Form Centre is a separate branch of The Becket School which houses Post-16 classrooms, a private study area, ICT facilities and the Common Room, with its own food serving area.
In addition, some lessons do take place in specialised classrooms within the main school.
The key part of the Sixth Form facilities is the Common Room. This large room is found directly inside the Sixth Form Centre, and features sofas, catering, table football and a television system. The Sixth Form Committee decorates the Common Room and organizes social events throughout the year, but at all other times its a great place to just chill out and relax with your friends. A small patio is located just outside, which features picnic tables available at all times of the year.
The Common Room also features a canteen area, where sixth form students can purchase food and drink throughout the day. A wide variety of hot and cold food and drink is available, all payable via the school’s cashless catering system, which can be topped-up online or on site.
There is a large silent-study area above the common room which, as well as housing the Sixth Form Office, also contains ICT Facilities, cubicles for written work and a separate ICT area for group work. Notice boards also include latest information and advice on universities and open days. The study area also features full air conditioning equipment, keeping you cool in the summer but warm in the winter.
Specialist classrooms for Psychology, Economics, Sociology and Religious Studies are housed inside the Sixth Form Centre. Kitted out for group work, each classroom features interactive whiteboards and a modern ventilation system, as well as access to laptops for ICT work. Lessons outside the Sixth Form Centre are equally equipped, with specialist subjects having specialist equipment. For example, separate labs for physics, chemistry and ethics exist, with modern equipment and prep rooms.
Learning Resource Centre
If you need somewhere for reference or research materials, or if you need to get hold of a textbook, the LRC is the place. There is a wide variety of non-fiction books, including UCAS advice, textbooks and general research books. If you need something to read, there is also a large quantity of fiction, including novels, short stories and comics. Specially for Sixth Formers, the LRC also sports a large Senior Fiction section, with both contemporary and classic works. If you need somewhere else to work, the LRC also features space for you to do your homework and revision, as well as including ICT facilities. If you need advice on university or work, as well as the books available, Mrs Nolan and Mr Blane can be found in an office just off the LRC.
The Becket has excellent sports facilities, including two gyms, astroturf, a cricket pitch and many football pitches. There are many after-school and lunchtime sports activities to get involved in, as well as Sixth Form teams for inter-school competitive sports. Those who choose to study PE/Sports Science also make use of a dedicated classroom for this subject.
Drama and Music
The school has two comprehensive drama studios, as well as use of the school Hall (see below). All the rooms include modern equipment, including excellent lighting and audio visual facilities. All drama students are guaranteed to use these facilities, specifically for drama performances which the school puts on each year.
Those who are of a more musical inclination will love the resources The Becket have. There are 5 music practice rooms, with instrumental tuition available, as well as a fully-featured recording studio. There are also two music classrooms, linked into the school’s central recording system, and plenty of instruments available for use or hire.
Hall and Chapel
The School Hall is a fantastic resource for everyone, and is used for drama and music performances, as well as some sports and the school’s annual Talent Show. The Hall is kitted out with A/V facilities and recording equipment, as well as comprehensive lighting suitable for any use.
Those who are in need of a quiet space should head to the Chapel, which is always available and staffed by the school Chaplain. The Becket Sixth is a Catholic sixth form, and so there are regular masses conducted in the chapel, as well as other services, but anyone who needs a quiet place or some emotional advice can be sure to turn to the Chapel and the Chaplain for advice. There are also annual retreats to Lourdes and The Briars in Crich.
