Welcome to Lady Hawkins' High School
As a school, we are a centre of learning at the heart of our community, enjoying an excellent local reputation, the support of parents and the community, and a talented and dedicated staff. Most important of all, we benefit from an able and receptive student body that never fails to impress and inspire.
Whilst we enjoy a long history, a school cannot rest on its laurels and we are constantly seeking ways to improve all aspects of our provision. As a stand-alone academy we set our own priorities – and we choose to focus our efforts upon improving the quality of teaching and learning, and raising student attainment across the curriculum.
We are proud of our traditions and our heritage dating back nearly 400 years, but also acutely aware of our responsibility to nurture, inspire and prepare our students to take their places as leaders and innovators in a rapidly changing world. We strive to ensure that every student reaches their full potential and enjoys learning. At the same time, we appreciate the importance of giving our students the broadest possible range of opportunities outside the classroom and encouraging them to develop their sporting, artistic and creative talents.
Throughout all aspects of our work are embedded our core values of hard work, discipline, smart appearance and respect. We encourage our students to contribute positively to their own community and beyond.
A new exciting phase of your learning career begins in the Sixth Form and you will notice a lot of differences from your experiences of Key Stage 4. There is still a pleasant, hard working atmosphere but it is relaxed and you will be treated as an adult.
You will have more freedom and privileges and, as the most senior members of the student community, this brings more responsibilities. You will have more unallocated time than you are used to and while there will be time for relaxation, you will be expected to use most of this to effectively support your studies.
Your responsibilities will include always behaving in an appropriate way and joining in with opportunities to develop your social skills and those of younger students. We expect all staff and students to share the working model outlined below:
The 4 A’s
- Ambition: clear and challenging goals
- Attitude: determination to work hard and overcome difficulties
- Attention to detail: responsibility for your own learning and actions
- Achievement: realising goals and celebrating success
Our Sixth Form Centre has well equipped, modern facilities including a common room and study areas with IT. Students have use of a kitchen, exercise gym and sports hall. Sixth formers are also able to use all the resources enjoyed by the rest of the school e.g. library, tennis courts, study room.
All the tutors are specialist Sixth Form tutors and are responsible for supporting your academic and social progress. They will also support you with UCAS applications and general careers advice. You will have regular timetabled mentor meetings with your tutor or Head of Sixth Form.
Being successful in the Sixth Form depends on combining hard work and academic achievement with taking advantage of the wide range of social, cultural and sporting opportunities on offer. Sixth Formers are expected to take on a variety of roles to support students in the school e.g. Reading Buddy in our school and in primary schools, leading charity fundraising activities, and Senior Prefects.
For eligible students, the Bursary Fund can provide financial assistance to young people whose access to, or completion of education is inhibited by financial constraints or barriers. The fund can help towards the cost of essential course-related costs such as travel to sixth form, equipment, books and educational visits including to university open days or interviews.
We are delighted to be able to offer full-time students to have the use of an iPad for learning during their time at Lady Hawkins’. The iPad must be insured at the cost of the user, which will be organised by the school.
The school is well equipped to provide an outstanding education for all students and to prepare them for the world of work, further and higher education.
We are very proud of the excellent achievement of the school and of our students in all areas, and acknowledge students continuing success in the community, further and higher education.
