Welcome to The Westgate School

The Westgate School is a vibrant educational community serving the area of Cippenham to the west of Slough. It delivers a high quality comprehensive education for approximately 1000 young people aged between 11 and 19 years, providing a viable alternative to the selective system which prevails in the town. In our last Ofsted inspection the school was deemed outstanding in all categories.

At The Westgate School, we aim to support the intellectual, emotional and personal development of all of our students. In reality, this means providing them with the literacy, numeracy and practical skills to access a rich curriculum which offers them a diverse range of academic and practical subjects and, in addition to gaining high quality qualifications, allows them to develop their talents and skills and discover new interests. We are also committed to offering our students a curriculum and opportunities that will stretch and challenge their capacity to think for themselves, develop their confidence and provide them with a safe environment in which they can step outside of their comfort zone. In a rapidly changing and developing world, with increasing globalisation, we believe it is vital to equip our students with skills that will enable them to adapt and take on the jobs of the future, some of which may not yet exist.

Levels of attainment at the school exceed most similar schools and our students make progress that is significantly above that of other schools nationally. However, another of our key measures of success is ensuring that all students leave The Westgate School fully equipped to take their next step in life, whatever that may be. We provide all of our students with clear careers guidance and advice and they all have extensive opportunities to engage with local and national businesses. We are extremely fortunate to work with a number of high profile companies who provide our students with valuable insight into the world of work, develop their employability skills and enable them to gain work experience. However, school should also be about enjoyment and celebration of success and, at The Westgate School, we believe learning should be engaging and fun and we provide a wide range of enrichment activities beyond the classroom.

We are committed to developing strong moral values amongst our students and place a high value on tolerance, honesty and kindness. We recognise that our students are all individuals and we work hard to identify and support their wellbeing and individual needs through a structured tutor system, dedicated pastoral support team and strong SEND department.

We value all members of The Westgate School community and our success is built on respect and a strong partnership of students, staff, parents and governors

About us

With articulate young adults in our sixth form, this is a natural progression for students beyond year 11. Most students study 4 AS levels in Year 12 and take three of these through to A level in Year 13.  The details for the AS subjects on offer can be found in our prospectus. There are also opportunities for students to study BTEC level 3 courses.

One of the advantages that a school environment can offer is the facility to provide outstanding pastoral care.  Tracking progress is vital and we will collate and send home data on each student in every subject at least 4 times a year. This is to ensure students are on track for achieving their full potential and that we can provide support for those who are finding the workload, pace or content difficult.

The Westgate School’s Sixth Form is not just about academic achievement.  It is also about being part of a supportive community that helps all students achieve success; about facing new challenges and making new friends, and about developing or discovering your abilities and talents ready for the next step into University life.

We warmly welcome applications from external candidates to join our Sixth Form. The choice of where to study is an important decision and we hope the information provided here will be helpful in this process. We believe further that success in exams is of prime importance, but we seek to develop our students both personally and socially as well.

You will find that you are taught with other students who, like you, are enthusiastic about your chosen subjects. We value your ideas, and discussion, independent research, group work and presentations, which are all likely to form part of your courses, as well as the expertise provided by our highly qualified staff. Of course, you will have to work hard, and probably, for the first time in your education, you will find yourself with private study periods in school. Our facilities for study include a well-stocked school resources centre, study room and an extensive computer network.

Please browse the other sections of our Sixth Form area on this website - we offer excellent opportunities both academically and socially and provide a friendly and purposeful environment in which to study.
