Welcome to Kenton School
We could not have put it better ourselves than Ofsted’s description of our Sixth Form. We offer a huge range of high quality courses, which can be combined to suit the interests and ambitions of every student. We are able to do this because of our popularity, which has risen continuously over recent years, with growing applications both from Kenton's Year 11 students and from students joining us from other schools.
Whether you aim at outstanding academic achievement and go to Oxford or Cambridge University or whether your aim in the Sixth Form is to gain better skills for work, we have courses for what you need.
Kenton students have the best that a Sixth Former can get. In the Kenton School building they have state-of-the art specialist facilities in every subject area, as well as a Sixth Form wing which includes a computer work-station private study area, a comfortable
Sixth Form common room and an all-day Sixth Form adult cafe. They also have a staggering choice of courses and additional opportunities.
The truth is that Kenton Sixth Form students have all the advantages that a College student has: a wide range of academic and vocational options in an adult
atmosphere and a well resourced environment.
However, Kenton can also offer all the advantages of a traditional School Sixth Form: the highest academic standards and teaching, with excellent guidance, pastoral care and support for a student’s current learning and for their career and Higher Education choices.
Sixth Form students benefit from our excellent facilities. The two designated Sixth Form study rooms provide a peaceful learning environment where students are able to make use of the computer facilities and reference library. Students can unwind in their very own common room and buy food and drink in our Sports Café which is open to staff and Sixth Form students only. Furthermore, Sixth Form students are welcome to use all of the excellent facilities in the main school.
We recognise that students are unlikely to achieve their potential if they are not happy and secure at school. We are proud of the excellent pastoral support that we are able to provide for all Sixth Form students at Kenton. All students have a specific Year Leader Learning, whose main priority is to ensure that every student is reaching their potential in lessons. This is achieved by carrying out regular progress checks in conjunction with subject teachers. In addition, to our Year Leader Learning, we employ two Heads of Year who are on hand throughout the day to support students with their welfare needs. In addition, every student has an individual tutor whom they see on a daily basis. We have established links with a range of external providers and feel confident that all Sixth Form students receive effective information, advice and guidance.
We are very proud of the achievement of our Year 13 students in 2014. In 2014, our students achieved school record results for the third year in a row. Most notably, our vocational students achieved the best results in Newcastle upon Tyne, with 94% of all of our students moving into higher education, apprenticeship or employment. This is due to high quality teaching and learning and a relentless focus on student achievement.
