Welcome to Cotham School


Cotham has an excellent reputation in Bristol built on our specialisms in Performing Arts, Maths and Computing and an outstanding GCSE and A Level examination record that is amongst the very best in the city. Our Sixth Form, the North Bristol Post 16 Centre, is thriving with over eight hundred students studying academic programmes shared between Cotham and Redland Green School. At Cotham we take pride in the academic success of our students achieved over many years. However, whilst we are proud of this success we are never complacent. We strive to secure the best possible achievement and outcomes for every student and work tirelessly towards achieving these goals every day.

About us

Academic or Vocational?

Academic qualifications, like GCSE and A-Levels, include traditional school subjects and are typically classroom-based, with more emphasis on theory than practice.

They are assessed externally through formal exams or externally moderated coursework.

  • E.g. History, Biology, English Literature, Sociology.

Vocational qualifications, like BTECs, are career-focused with a real-world approach, so they are typically taught in a more hands-on way. They are mostly assessed internally throughout the course, via practical assignments and coursework.

  • E.g. Health & Social Care, IT Practitioners, Engineering.

Our school culture is one where the full range of success – creative, sporting, academic, practical support for others and triumph over adversity is celebrated. All students benefit from the best trained and qualified staff and major investment in new facilities and resources. We offer a broad and balanced curriculum and a stimulating range of extra-curricular activities, trips and visits to support wider learning.

Inclusion and Learning Support 

Cotham School is an inclusive community that makes provision for a wide variety of needs.

The school recognises that some students will have a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of their peers.  This includes students who have learning difficulties, a physical disability,  or social, emotional or behavioural concerns and for whom factors within the students themselves, or their environment, may prevent them from achieving their full potential.

Support in divided into two broad areas:  Learning Support and Student and Family Support.
