Welcome to Edgbarrow School

Edgbarrow Sixth Form has a great deal to offer you. It is well established as a highly respected learning centre.

Results are impressive and for the past three years, we have been rated as outstanding in the national Advanced Level Performance System (ALPS) rankings. The reasons for this impressive progress are great teaching; superb care for individuals’ well-being and progress; respect for individuals’ ideas; and positive relationships. We work hard and we work together. We expect high standards but we genuinely enjoy spending time with our students and offer many extra opportunities to make their Sixth Form experience a rich and enjoyable one.

As Edgbarrow’s Sixth Form continues to grow and develop, we believe that it is a really good time to be joining us.

Facilities available

In September 2010 we opened a new Sixth Form Centre at Edgbarrow School.

The modern building provides Sixth Formers with a ‘college’ atmosphere, still attached to the school, but with its own space and dress codes.  The centre offers a light, spacious learning environment.  Our students love the atmosphere in Sixth Form.

The centre contains nine specialist Sixth Form teaching spaces each with interactive whiteboards and video facilities.  English, Geography, Philosophy and Ethics, Mathematics, Modern Foreign Languages, History, Sociology and Psychology all have their own dedicated learning areas.  In addition there are three new business classrooms and dedicated Digital Photography and Media Studies suites  with a separate audio lab.  Removable walls between classrooms have been used to create flexible learning areas for guest speakers and after-school activities.

At the heart of the building, the Atrium provides a common room for Sixth Form students to socialise and enjoy the tuck shop facilities and catering from the kitchen.  The tuck shop is run by a team of students with the proceeds being used to support social events in the centre.  Before school, the centre of the building is also an assembly space with wide-screen projectors and audio equipment.

As you move through the building the independent learning area provides students with a quiet area for essay writing and research and a silent study area.  The centre is also equipped with 40 computers in air-conditioned rooms and has automatic doors and a lift to the upper floor to provide disabled access to all areas.

Our modern building has many ‘green’ credentials with under-floor heating, solar panels and computer controlled heating, lighting and ventilation.

This £3m building provides an excellent environment for students to excel in their learning as preparation for college or university.

Additional support

At Edgbarrow we pride ourselves on strong pastoral relationships across the school, and particularly in the Sixth Form.  Students begin Year 12 in tutor groups of approximately 22 with an experienced and dedicated tutor.  Where possible we try to put individuals together with their friends, but we aim to make the tutor groups as equal as possible in terms of social, academic, sporting and musical skills.  In Year 12, tutor sessions are held each morning for the first six weeks or so, and then we concentrate on students who need more support at challenging times, giving more independence to those who are coping well.  Students are involved in activities that will improve study skills, increase awareness of career opportunities or enhance life skills ... and we try to have fun too!

This personal contact means that it is easy for tutors to support students and, if things start to go wrong, intervene to get students back on track. We try to speak to students as much as possible and encourage them to talk to us about any concerns they have, and we include parents in our conversations so that they can also support their son / daughter throughout the year.  Staff really do give huge amounts of time to their students at Edgbarrow.

If students encounter any major obstacles in their life they can also be referred to our dedicated Student Support Manager who gives them time to explore their worries and concerns.  We also have access to a professional counsellor who is available to students on a weekly basis.
