Welcome to South Wolverhampton and Bilston Academy
WELCOME to SWB 6th
At SWB Academy we are dedicated to providing first class education to our students, ensuring that they are supported to make above expected progress and leave with the qualifications they need to move onto University, further training or employment.
We are now the first choice school for parents and youngsters in the South Wolverhampton and Bilston area and applications to join our 6th Form have risen significantly over the last few years.
Expectations of Post-16 students are extremely high. Students will have every opportunity for a first class education which will enable them to progress to their ultimate career destinations. There are a wide variety of courses available to study within our Sixth Form, all of which are taught by specialist qualified teachers. Our impressive facilities in our £25 million new building include dedicated Sixth Form study areas, social spaces and specialist facilities.
The Academy provides a caring environment with an active pastoral and careers support system to enable students to maximise their potential and make the right choices about their future career paths.
Our aim is quite simply to help ours students to achieve success and point them in the right direction for prosperous future careers. If you’d like to make an appointment to come and see the Academy and the things we can offer, we would be delighted to welcome you!
SWB6th aims to create a purposeful, friendly and adult environment in which students are encouraged to develop a sense of independence and take responsibility for their study: this can perhaps best be described as ‘challenge with support’.
The two years in the Sixth Form are important in shaping your future career and education and will also, we hope, be remembered as an exciting and enjoyable experience. We offer students a chance to continue developing their study skills, personal qualities and time management that are required later in life.
Above all SWB6th is about helping you realise your potential whatever it is. We want our Sixth Formers to be successful and happy whether this is success in University entrance, in your chosen career or in developing your wider potential. We also want our Sixth Formers to be considerate and responsible members of a happy and thriving community and true ambassadors for the Academy in the wider community!
The Academy Sixth Form is vibrant and successful. We offer a wide range of A Level and BTEC Level 3 courses across many subject areas. Strong links with a range of other external providers allow us to increase the range of courses, opportunities and enrichment activities on offer, ensuring every student has a programme of study tailored to meet their own needs.
Expectations of our Sixth Form students are extremely high, with attendance and progress being closely monitored which means that students are well supported and in a position to achieve their very best before moving onto higher education or employment.
The Sixth Form at the South Wolverhampton and Bilston Academy aspires to be the home of success, a place where all can achieve their potential.
More than Studying...
Academic success is only one part of the Academy Sixth Form experience. There is a thriving community spirit with students working as mentors, administrators and role models in the Academy. Charity fund raising is a central part within the Sixth Form with students organising and supervising a variety of activities throughout the year. We are keen to give all students various roles and responsibilities.
As part of the new £25m building, there is a dedicated Sixth Form area on the top floor. Students also have access to the latest ICT resources including comprehensive Wi-Fi access, enabling a flexible approach to their studies. Students also benefit from the use of a variety of teaching and learning spaces throughout the new facility which enhance their experiences. These include a purpose built performance hall, lecture theatre, Science Super Lab and other specialist curriculum suites.
There are also a variety of social spaces including a general dining area, silver service restaurant, coffee shop and outdoor dining terrace. The Sixth Form at SWB Academy combines outstanding learning facilities with a professional business feel which maximises opportunities for both formal qualifications and personal development
All students are involved in a programme of personal and social education with the accent on personal development via exploring a range of wider issues, through debates, guest speakers, discussion, etc.
At the start of Year 12 the focus will be on improving students’ independent learning capabilities via a programme of study skills. In Year 13, we will focus on the wider world and ‘what comes next’ once you leave the Academy. You will see your personal tutor on a one to one basis every six weeks. This will be recorded in your Progress File. Group Tutorials take place four mornings a week at 8.45am.
Enrichment Courses and Qualifications: All sixth form students are expected to participate in a wide ranging enrichment programme with various events and activities throughout the year. This allows the students to work in a team situation, identifying local community needs, designing a specific event or project, managing its actual and financial delivery and evaluating its success. Those involved, experience a true degree of satisfaction.
Careers Education and Guidance Programme: All students are involved in a programme which runs throughout the year designed to support them on their career pathways. The programme covers further study at College or University, Apprenticeships and Employment. Workshops include student finance, selfemployment, personal statements, CV’s and interview skills. Students will also have the opportunity to visit HE fairs and University Open Days in preparation for applying to University. Every student will have access to our Careers Education & Guidance Manager for support with applications and their career plans.
SWB Academy Sixth Form is focussed on student’s next steps and we offer them the relevant information, advice and guidance to help them achieve success.
