Welcome to Alec Reed Academy

Welcome to the Alec Reed Academy, where traditional values of hard work and effort, coupled with Respect, Honesty and Kindness underpin our pursuit of excellence.

Our passion is for learning. We want our students to be excited by their experience in the classroom and beyond, committed to achieving their very best and confident about their futures.

We are proud to be an all-through Academy for students aged 3-19 (with new two-year old nursery provision from January 2015) and an Adult Learning Centre. Our ‘state of the art’ facilities have benefited from extensive capital funding. The most recent developments include the Arc in the primary phase and the Quad in the secondary phase. Extensive sports facilities including a Community Sports Centre are enjoyed by students and staff at the Academy and members of our wider communities alike. The Academy is fortunate in that it owns its own ‘Academy Fields’; a large section of fertile land and the perfect environment for outdoor learning.

The combination of passionate and talented teaching and support staff and excellent facilities create an enviable learning environment.

Our aim: to be an outstanding learning community where individuals thrive. By working together - parents, students, staff - we can achieve it.

I hope that you enjoy exploring our website, that it provides a flavour of the dynamic and thriving life of the Academy. Should any further information be needed, please do not hesitate to make contact at any time.

About us

The Alec Reed Academy is a special partnership between Government and private investment. The Academy’s founding Sponsor is Sir Alec Reed, who was knighted in recognition of his entrepreneurial and philanthropical work both in the UK and Internationally. The Academy comprises:

  • A Neighbourhood Nursery Initiative for 3-5 year olds linked to a 0-3 nursery nearby
  • An extensive parenting programme with activities for children under 3 years
  • A Nursery and Primary School for 3 – 11 year olds
  • A High School for 11 – 19 year olds
  • An Adult Learning Centre
  • A Community Sports Centre

The co-located Local Authority maintained John Chilton School for both primary and high school age students with special needs is also housed at the centre of the Academy building.

As an all-age school with over 1700 children and young people and 280 staff the Academy provides an environment for life long learning in state of the art facilities. From the professional theatre, dance and recording studios to the sports hall, fitness suite, climbing wall, extensive professional outdoor sports facilities which include a professional standard all weather pitch, five-a-side pitches and tennis courts, Alec Reed Academy leads the way nationally as a school of the future realised today.

The aim of the Academy is to provide high quality education across the full age and ability range, covering the national curriculum and stage not age progression, a longer taught day in the high school and with an added focus on the Academy’s specialism of Enterprise.

It is a strong feature of the philosophy of the Alec Reed Academy to focus on and encourage positive values and attitudes as a necessary prerequisite for successful learning. The effective systems of behaviour management are underpinned by an extensive system of pastoral care and inclusion which promotes confidence and independence.

Additional support

Pastoral care at Alec Reed Academy is based on the philosophy of developing care, understanding and mutual respect. We seek a joint approach from all those involved and connected with the Academy, the staff, students, parents/carers an approach which is based upon a recognition of the dignity and self-esteem of each individual.

The Pastoral System at Alec Reed Academy is organised by the SaFE Workers (Student and Family Education Workers). This system focuses on supporting all children and young people to ensure that they reach their full potential both in terms of their learning as well as their personal and social development.

Every member of the Academy community is also a member of one of the three Houses in the Academy. Each House is made up of a vertical group of forms - allowing all age groups to belong to a common grouping. The 3 Houses are each led by members of the Academy Leadership Team and provide opportunities for healthy competition and promoting enterprising and philanthropic initiatives.
