Welcome to Gwernyfed High School
What an exciting but nerve-wracking time! Not only are you working hard to complete your GCSEs you’re also thinking about what comes next. So, what does come next? For eleven years you’ve not had much of a choice but now there are so many to make. Do you stay at Gwernyfed to study, travel to other educational establishments or even further afield? What subjects will you study? What type of qualifications are you going to aim for? Do you want to go to university? What kind of career are you interested in? Confused yet? You needn’t be.
These choices may seem to be complex but remember we’re here to help. You can speak to any of your subject teachers, form teacher or me; I’m always more than happy to give you the help and advice that I can. You should have already had a look at the amazing Sixth Form Centre, so let me tell you a little bit about being a sixth former at Gwernyfed.
Here, at Gwernyfed, we are exceptionally proud to be able to offer a very wide range of subjects and qualifications. There really is something to suit almost everyone. From academic subjects like maths, the sciences and English to new subjects like sociology. Additionally, by travelling to other centres which we’re linked to like Builth, Brecon, Crickhowell and Llandrindod, you can study more vocational subjects such as Public Services, Health and Social Care and Law. It also means that you can travel to other sixth forms – which is a great way to experience different places and make new friends. If you do travel to other Sixth Forms we will help to organise your travel arrangements, so that’s one thing less to worry about.
As you already know, at Gwernyfed, we really try our best to give you all of the help you will need. This will be especially important when you are making the step from GCSE to A Level and a real advantage of studying where you are well known. We know your learning style, your strengths and weaknesses and so we’ll be able to give you lots of help and support. However, you’ll also find that we will expect you to be a lot more independent and give you a lot more responsibility.
There are also a huge number of activities that you can get involved in, all of which are brilliant for including on CVs and university applications. You will be responsible for organising sporting and charity events, mentoring younger students, teaching CSLA and APAUSE amongst many more. Then there’s the Sixth Form Ball...Just speak to our current Sixth Formers, you will soon get a clear idea of just how different their experience is compared with yours in Year 11.
I really look forward to speaking to you personally about the Sixth Form at the Open Evening and to receiving an application from you.
