Welcome to Hackney University Technical College

Welcome from the Principal

Over the past weeks, I have been working with staff and students to ensure that we build on our strengths and rapidly address the areas which still need improvement. We are determined to do our best for all of our students and to ensure they succeed. This is a small school with excellent students – we can do it

I will be running weekly surgery for parents and carers on Wednesdays from 16:00 to 17:00. If you would like to arrange to meet me to discuss your child’s progress or any other matters related to HUTC, please contact Samantha Wheeler on 020 7613 9401 to make an appointment.

As we approach our first set of public exams, there will be a lot of hard work to be done by staff and students and I know that we are all up for the challenge!

With my best wishes,

Catharine Wensley
Acting Principal

About us

Hackney University Technical College is a bespoke school for 14-19 year olds located in the heart of Tech City, Shoreditch. We are the first UTC to open in London. Leading the way with our re-vamped curriculum for 2014-2015, we offer the core subjects with a digital media production focus. All students learn programming and benefit from our extensive involvement with professional partners in the tech city world.

Our curriculum is strongly influenced by employers and universities, making education as relevant as possible for work. The learning experience will provide direct entry to employment and higher education opportunities on graduation from the UTC. It also helps to meet employers’ needs for high level skills and broadens the offer available to local communities.

To give you every opportunity to succeed, you’ll have both a university and a business mentor who will work with you to help you to achieve. You can ask them for help and support in a range of topics, whether it’s help with your projects, your exam preparation or your future career plans. They’re here to help you succeed.

There are different pathways available, so you can choose the route and range of subjects which best reflect your talents and supports your plans for the future. It may seem early in your life to be thinking about your career plans, but the skills you’ll learn at Hackney UTC will set you up for a great future. Whether it’s university, apprenticeships or getting a successful job, we will make sure that you achieve with us.

Hackney UTC gives young people the chance to learn and succeed within an inspirational institution, supported by expert staff, utilising the latest technology that industry has to offer.

The UTC operates a 3-term year and will follow a longer school day than is typical: 9.00am-5pm. The longer day is a unique feature for all UTCs and is another way for students to prepare for the world of work. The longer day will mean that students are able to participate in employer led projects and in extra curricular activities as part of the core hours.

Work related learning and gaining the practical skills required for employment forms a central part of the learning programmes available. The curriculum is actively shaped by employers, ensuring the knowledge and skills pupils gain fully meet the demands of industry.
