Welcome to Heathcote School & Science College

Heathcote is a fully inclusive mixed comprehensive school with 1150 learners, including a specialist unit for up to 15 deaf learners.

Heathcote is situated in North Chingford. In our most recent inspection in January 2014, Ofsted recognised us as a good school. They went on to write “that one of the strengths of the leadership, and the school, is the way every student, regardless of ability, behaviour or attitude is treated as an individual with the potential to succeed. As a result students flourish and are prepared well for the next stage of their education, training or employment.”

In his letter to the School in 2014, David Laws, Minister for Schools, congratulated us for our excellent GCSE results. He wrote; “Your school has proven to be one of the top 100 in England showing the greatest sustained improvement over the past three years.”

Recently the school achieved the much sought after STEM Assured status because of the quality and breadth of the curriculum in science, technology, engineering and maths. The validation report says that Heathcote School and Science College is guided by a strategy that makes science and STEM a clear focus for the whole school. It has a history of raising aspirations in the local community.

In 2010, Heathcote was awarded £6.1m to build a sixth form which opened in 2011. Within two years of opening our sixth form it was oversubscribed.  Our extensive experience of project management meant that the building works had no adverse impact on the rest of the school.

In 2014 Heathcote was ‘adopted’ by Gardiner and Theobald, a multi-national construction consultancy company.  They provide meaningful work experience and mentoring for our students.

About us

We are proud of the range of the courses that we offer and believe that there is genuinely something for everyone here, whether a young person is working towards retaking an all important Mathematics or English GCSE or is aiming for Oxbridge. Heathcote Sixth Form offers students an educational experience which is genuinely unique, bringing together students from every social, academic and religious background, ensuring one-to-one care and guidance and offering students an opportunity to work with and support younger children lower down the school.

The most important thing about the range of courses offered by any College or Sixth Form is what they lead to. We believe that the courses we deliver offer students clear paths of progression, whether into Higher Education, employment or further training. For that reason we work closely with every student giving them personalised guidance on their choices for the future.

Ultimately, once you have made a well informed choice about your studies, success is determined by a number of simple factors, including good organisation, regular attendance and hard work in and outside of lessons.

Facilities available

The computers in the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) are available for students to use for quiet study; periodicals and newspapers are also available for reading. The library in the main school has a range of books which Sixth Formers can also borrow. The LRC is available for quiet study from 8.00am, throughout the day and after school until 5.00pm. The LRC will also be available for extended hours in the run-up to examinations.

Additional support

Where concern is raised by a teacher about a student, monitoring systems will be put into place to support that student, e.g. Impact Report. Students will, with help, set short term targets. If after this there is still cause for concern parents/carers will become involved. Our aim is to ensure all students achieve their full potential and develop the skills required for independent study.
