Welcome to Nene Park Academy
Considering what and where to study after year 11 can be a daunting prospect. I firmly believe that, in landing on this page, you have made the first step in the right direction. We are large enough to be able to offer a wide range of subject to study both at BTEC and A-level yet not so large that you will feel lost here. We will provide you with tailored guidance throughout your two years with us. Your Academic Mentor will ensure that you have the right balance of support and challenge to enable you to achieve the highest possible results.
The sixth form at Nene Park Academy is comprised of over 200 students across the two years. We have a higher than average proportion of students in year 13 who go on to study at university and over the past few years we have had students secure places at some of the most prestigious institutions in the country including Imperial College London, Oxford and Durham. We teach all major A-level subjects from Maths, English Literature, History and Physics through to Art, Drama and PE. We also deliver L3 BTEC courses, including Applied Science and Health and Social Care. We are also pleased to announce a new Hair and Beauty course which offers the opportunity to learn in the environs of a fully equipped salon.
- All students are provided with an Academic Mentor who is there to support you through your time with us.
- Your Academic Mentor will be your first point of contact providing you with both pastoral and academic support.
- You will meet together three times a week in morning registration to be given key messages and ensure you are not experiencing any difficulties.
- You will also be expected to attend one to one sessions both to discuss progress but also to set additional reading and research beyond your studies so as to help you compete along with the very best students nationally.
- Once in year 13, all students will be expected to enter the UCAS HE process and your Academic Mentor will guide you through this; helping support you in writing your personal statement and providing advice and guidance on your choices.
- We do however understand that university is not for everyone and, as such provide support for those wishing to pursue a high level apprenticeship or to enter the world of work.
Choosing your courses
The two year A Level programme requires you to select three subjects at A Level or BTEC, to be studied over the two years of the course duration (Applied Science counts as 2 choices). Students must successfully pass the Year 12 internal examinations in all three subjects in order to be confident of securing a place in Year 13
Nene Park Academy’s state of the art building was opened by Professor Lord Winston in 2013. For Arts subjects, we have fully functioning rehearsal spaces for music, recording facilities, a television studio, Mac suite, Art rooms and a Drama Studio. Similarly, our science students can enjoy fully equipped labs in which to study and the sixth form itself has its own dedicated study area which we are looking to further expand in the future.
There is currently a brand new wing under construction and this will include additional working space for sixth form students from September 2018.
At Nene Park Academy, alongside your Academic Mentor, you will be supported by two Post 16 Advisors, one of whom deals primarily with year 12 and one who supports year 13. Both are always on hand to deal with any queries or problems that may arise. Our year 12 advisor Deb Lysak will support you throughout your application process and arrange a time for you to come in for a guidance meeting and our year 13 advisor will, in turn, support you throughout the UCAS process.
Beyond your academic studies, we also recognise that this can be a challenging time in your life for many reasons and as such, we have a counsellor who works with the 6th Form.
Success takes many forms and we are as proud as our students who get in to top flight universities as we are of one of our students who set up fundraising activities to send money to Sierra Leone to help tackle the Ebola outbreak. Over the past few years, one of our students was offered a place at Oxford to read economics, another has gained an apprenticeship with the leading accountancy firm Ernst and Young and recently a student has gone on to read Maths at Imperial having secured a triple A* at A-level. Through the support we have been able to offer and students' hard work, we have had a record number of unconditional offers including the provision of university bursaries. Indeed, in terms of UCAS offers made, we are significantly above the National Average.
Success is also evidenced by students who achieve beyond the confines of their individual subjects and we like to think that at Nene Park Academy we are pretty successful in helping our 6th Form students achieve this. Each year we enter the ‘ifs’ student investor competition and last year managed to get through to the finals. In sport, our boys' 6th Form football team have been County runners up and we have also set up girls' Netball teams in both year 12 and 13. If sport is not your thing then you may wish to take part in the whole school musicals or just join the 6th Form Christmas choir at the old people's home to sing some carols.
