Welcome to Joyce Frankland Academy
Thank you for visiting our site and taking an interest in our Academy. I hope the first question you are asking is ‘Who is Dame Joyce Frankland?’ as this single question defines who we are and what we stand for. Dame Joyce Frankland is our Foundress, our original benefactor and the visionary who saw how she could inspire future generations to continue her legacy. This is an extraordinary achievement for a woman living in Tudor England. I am proud to be the latest person to lead Newport into the future and ensure the next generation of Newportonians continue to add to our illustrious 427 year history.
Traditional education and values were at the heart of Dame Joyce Frankland's vision and they are the cornerstones of our Academy today. We expect students to push themselves in all subject areas whilst also taking a role in the wider communities to which they belong. Every student follows a curriculum designed to challenge them and ultimately to empower them to get the jobs and opportunities which will define them and through association, us. We compliment our broad academic curriculum, which has a strong focus on the traditional subjects, with a wide range of enrichment opportunities which see students represent us across the Arts, Sports and Humanities. Indeed many of our students take the opportunity to not only take advantage of these activities in our school, village and county but across the various countries and continents of the world. Newport has been directly involved in work and activities spanning across Europe, Africa, Asia and South America in the past twelve months.
Our sense of community is pivotal to us. At Newport every student has a younger peer who they support, in turn they are supported by an elder student. This approach creates a climate which meets the vision set out by Dame Joyce Frankland in 1588, to ‘be good Members of the Common Wealth’; this is demonstrable in how we organise ourselves on a daily basis .
At Newport we know what we stand for, we know we set the highest expectations for ourselves and most importantly we know our individual role in achieving them. It is a privilege for me to represent not only our present students but all those associated with our Academy in the past and the vision of a lady which is as relevant today as she was over 400 years ago.
