Welcome to The Blue School

Since 1641, The Blue School has served the families of the City of Wells and its surrounding communities in the County of Somerset, South West England. The Blue caters for 11 to 18 year olds and as a mixed, non-fee paying, state maintained Church of England School has a fully inclusive admissions policy. Please explore our website and find out about our vibrant school community in this beautiful corner of the UK.

About us

The history of our school dates back to 1641 when it was established as a charitable foundation as a result of a local churchman Ezekial Barkham’s legacy. It is understood that our name was derived over time as a result of the blue dyed uniforms that were provided for the original pupils.

Our students are encouraged to take pride in the school’s history, which is celebrated annually by each Year 7 in a Founder’s Day Service, and to value the traditions which have contributed.

As a Church of England School since foundation, we try to apply Christian values in our interactions with each other and in our assemblies, whilst recognising the differing religious backgrounds of our school community.

After over 350 years of educating the children of Wells and surrounding areas, the future appears to be secure, The Blue continuing to thrive as the largest, state maintained, all inclusive 11-18 years school in Somerset.

Facilities available

The current buildings were originally two separate schools built between the 1950s and 1960s, but in the 1970 these were merged to form a single campus for The Blue School.  Following completion of the Sports Centre in 1999 and the Science Block extension in 2005, associated remodelling of the whole campus has enabled us to provide outstanding facilities for our students. Some of the facilites are:-

  • The Bailey Hall Restaurant, Atom and Gallery Cafés serving a range of plated meals, snacks and drinks.
A fully equipped training kitchen, providing catering training to local work-based apprentices and our own sixth form students.
  • Learning Resources Centre
  • Learning Support Centre
  • The school has unrestricted use of the Wells Blue Sports Centre's facilities during the school day, to include 4 badminton courts, gymnasium, Fitness Studio, Weights Room, Outdoor Basketball areas, Outdoor Tennis Courts, Playing fields and more.
  • A dedicated office for students to work on projects, located near the Student Council's garden and chicken run!

Learner success

Sixth form students at The Blue School continue to excel with another year of fantastic and life changing results. 38% of all A level grades were achieved at A* or A. The average grade achieved in all A levels is equivalent to a B. These are the highest levels achieved by the school for the past 12 years. BTEC students held on to the amazing record of exceptional performance with over 74% of all BTEC grades achieved at Distinction or higher.
