Welcome to Wilsthorpe Community School

"We believe learning should be an inspirational journey, where all are challenged to achieve great things and to lead others, in a climate of dignity and respect."

Wilsthorpe is a community school with an 11 to 18 intake.  Maintained by Derbyshire Local Authority, Wilsthorpe is situated on the outskirts of the town of Long Eaton and has an intake that covers the full ability range from potential ‘Oxbridge’ candidates to students with learning difficulties.

We have an excellent and growing reputation in the local area, thanks to a rapid rise in achievement and attainment over the last 5 years.  For two years running (2010 and 2011), Wilsthorpe achieved the highest percentage of students getting five or more higher grade GCSEs, in Derbyshire.  We were named in the BBC’s ‘top 100 most improved schools in England’ list in 2009, 2010 and 2011 as well as being named  one of the top 10% of schools for “outstanding continuous improvement” by the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust in 2012.  In 2013, we broke previous records achieving our best results ever.

About us

Wilsthorpe Sixth Form is located in a purpose built block. Our ethos is to allow all students to develop their full potential. This is achieved through offering a wide range of courses at different levels, providing opportunities for personal development and giving students the support they need to progress successfully.

Our size, as a small school sixth form, enables us to educate you as an individual. Guidance and support is always available from our dedicated teachers.  All our students have a personal tutor, as well as being taught by experienced AS, A2 and BTEC teachers. Throughout the year you have regular timetabled opportunities to meet individually with staff to review your academic and personal progress.

Wilsthorpe Sixth Form provides many exciting opportunities for personal development and social interaction. These include;

  • Young Enterprise
  • Mentoring younger students
  • Community Involvement
  • Field study trips
  • Cultural Trips both in the UK and abroad
  • Outward Bound activities

Additional support

Applications for the Sixth Form are welcome from both external and internal students.

An Open Evening is held in October each year and it is recommended that you attend this to talk to teachers about suitable courses for you. External students are welcome to visit the Sixth Form at other times by arrangement – please call the school if you wish to visit independently.

Students are encouraged to apply by December 31st but applications will be taken up to the end of the academic year preceding entry.
