Welcome to Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen

Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen is a school that is rapidly moving forward. Our key aim is to provide a high quality and professional environment that extends the boundaries of learning and ensures that all will achieve.  We embrace the traditional values of respect and pride and combine this with innovative approaches to make the most of the world class facilities that the school now enjoys.  It is our mission to support all of our students to become the people that they want to be, and to provide them with the best possible passport to a bright future.

We value individuals, and put positive relationships at the heart of all that we do. We actually want to do what every secondary school says it does, but remarkably few actually do in practice: involve parents in a really meaningful way with the education of their sons and daughters. It is for these reasons that we have become a vertically integrated school: one where every child is known and none can slip through the net. This gives our young people a real sense of belonging and security and is the springboard to success.

We believe that a high quality education is a basic human right, and as a school, we have a moral duty to provide it. Our approach is simple: we will do whatever it takes to remove any barriers to learning that might potentially impede a young person. We passionately believe that our young people should be entitled to expect, and deserve, the best. All of our students are learning in an environment where they can feel safe, valued, included and proud.

We are proud to be the first secondary school in Wales to invest in our children’s futures by deploying an ipad mini to every young person for both school and home use. By putting access to information and learning communities into the pockets of our young people we are unlocking their creative potential, nurturing their natural curiosity, and genuinely allowing learning to be an anytime, anywhere experience. It is also allowing us to transform the classroom dynamic, and relationships within the school.

This is a very exciting time to be a student or member of staff at Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen, and our very best days are still ahead of us!

All Bridgend schools and the Colleges are working in collaboration to offer a wider range of courses to students returning to Y Dderwen’s Sixth Form. This means that some students may chose to take up a course offered elsewhere, but still be part of our Sixth Form.

This partnership is comprised of:

  • Archbishop McGrath Catholic High School
  • Bridgend College
  • Brynteg School
  • Bryntirion Comprehensive School
  • Coleg Cymenedol Y Dderwen
