Welcome to Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn

Welcome to the Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn. Our aim is to provide existing and prospective parents with useful information, as well as conveying an impression of the positive atmosphere within the school. There is a friendly and purposeful relationship between the pupils and staff in the school, which is reflected in the social interaction as well as in the academic achievements of our pupils.

We aim to bring out the best in our pupils at all times and we hope that every new pupil will take a full part in the life of the school: in its social, cultural, academic and recreational activities. This is well expressed in the school motto – ‘Gorau oll y gorau ellir’, which means ‘The best of all is your very best’.

We will be very pleased to welcome your child as a pupil to Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn. We look forward to a happy association with you and to a successful school career for your child at Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn.

About us

As you will see, Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn offers a complete range of courses that
appeal to both the academic and vocational student.

Our commitment to your development reaches its culmination in the Sixth Form and you will find a wealth of extra curricular activities to participate in. We believe that you will be best served by having a broad and balanced post 16 education.
The more you do in the Sixth Form, both from the programme of study and from the extra curricular activities; the better will be your career prospects. We will encourage and support you in doing this.

AS and A2 courses can be studied separately or in combination. Many students now look for that extra year at AS to gain valuable qualifications before moving on to pastures new at the end of Year 12. In order to maximise your opportunities, you will be expected to follow a programme whose components eventually equate to a minimum of three and a half A-Levels. The occasional student will exceed this number.

Don’t be put off. In our experience, the average Sixth Form student can achieve these goals and while we are very pleased to stretch the most able, there is a place in our Sixth Form for any student who has a predictable chance of passing the course.

Over the past three years, everyone in Year 13 who applied to university was offered a degree or HND course.

Finally, please take every opportunity to ask for advice. Apart from your family at home there are your teachers, the school careers advisor and current sixth form students to whom you can turn.

I hope you will join our sixth form next September.
