Welcome to St Helens College

Welcome from our Principal

Dr Jette Burford

I believe that St Helens College is unique. It has a wide spectrum of provision, serving the whole community, and supporting student progression and attainment. We are particularly proud of our progression routes as students can join us full-time at the age of 14 to complete Years 10 and 11, before then continuing to study at the College for either A levels, technical and professional, or an apprenticeship. Students can then choose to progress onto degree level study and beyond, here at St Helens College.

There is also a breadth of provision for adult learners at St Helens College, whether it is to study a course that will enable a promotion at work, to begin an entirely new career, or simply for personal development. We also offer courses for industry, courses for leisure and access courses for people looking for a new start in life.

University Centre St Helens offers students the opportunity to obtain a first class degree or professional qualification in a concentrated teaching and learning environment. Our tuition fees are significantly lower than other universities and with our small, specialist provision, student success and satisfaction is consistently high. In 2015, one in four of our degree students obtained a first class honours degree.

We understand that it can be a challenge for students to secure employment – which is why we have developed our curriculum to ensure that students are as well-equipped as possible to be competitive in the jobs market. We develop employability skills such as English and maths, teamwork, attitude to work and self-awareness. This is also why we offer guaranteed progression and on several courses we guarantee an interview for employment at the end of the course.

Hard work, effort and commitment from students, combined with our dedication to excellence, experienced staff and world class facilities mean students have the best chance to reach their full potential at St Helens College.

I hope that you will find our website useful in making your decision and I look forward to welcoming you to St Helens College in the near future.

About us

Welcome to St Helens College

We are one of the largest further and higher education providers in the Northwest, with a proven track record of providing quality education since 1896.

St Helens College caters for students of all ages, studying at all levels. We provide courses and training to around 8,000 students across two main sites, the Town Centre Campus and the Technology Centre Campus.

Over recent years there has been significant investment in the facilities at both campuses with over £65 million being invested to ensure we have the right infrastructure to support the curriculum and to provide a truly top class student experience. Our facilities are exceptional, including a purpose built animal unit, hair and beauty salons which are open to the public, a fine dining restaurant run by students, music, TV and radio studios and much more.

St Helens College works closely with employers from across the Liverpool City Region to not only close the gap on skills but to contribute to the economic turnaround of the region. We are actively involved in the community, with local businesses and have excellent links with industry. This not only allows us to provide excellent opportunities for our students to gain work experience placements, apprenticeships and job opportunities, but for the college to help employers ensure that they have a skilled workforce needed for the future.

In March 2014, we received an improved Ofsted inspection and St Helens College have made a clear commitment to drive up education standards in the Borough. We have a clear strategy as we progress on our journey to become Outstanding and achieve even better results for our students and stakeholders.

Learner success

We are delighted to share our fantastic successes and achievements. The College is on a journey to becoming an Ofsted Outstanding rated College, and our high quality teaching and learning, the excellent support we give to our students and the fantastic learning resources we have available will make this possible.
