Beechwood is a co-educational, independent, day, weekly and full boarding school for pupils aged 3-18, comprising a Nursery School, Preparatory School and Senior School. It is located in Kent, South-East England, under one hour by train from London.

Founded by the Sisters of the Sacred Heart, the School retains its Catholic tradition and welcomes pupils of all faiths.

About us

Beechwood is an independent co-educational boarding school for pupils aged 3-18, founded in 1915 by the Society of the Sacred Heart. Today, there are 420 pupils on roll and there is an even gender balance throughout the school. We are a Catholic school but welcome children of all faiths.

The Nursery School, Preparatory School and Senior School are located in 23 acres of landscaped grounds overlooking open countryside, but close to the centre of Tunbridge Wells. The Main School campus is based on a Victorian Villa constructed in 1855 with all facilities located on a single campus.

Boarding is offered for seventy boys and girls in modern and comfortable accomodation on the school campus. Junior boarders share in two or three bedded rooms whilst all sixth-form boarders are allocated single study bedrooms. As well as full baording, flexi boarding in also available to day pupils.

Facilities available

An excellent, broad general curriculum is provided and examination results and value added measures are strong given the non-selective intake of the school. A good range of sport, games, societies and clubs. Strong commitment to the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme. Full use is made of the cultural amenities of the town and of London.

Beechwood is centred on a Victorian Mansion built in 1855 in the style of Osborne House, Queen Victoria's home on the Isle of Wight. Set in 23 acres of landscaped grounds, within walking distance of the historic spa town of Royal Tunbridge Wells, Beechwood is just one hour from London by train and within easy reach of London Gatwick and Heathrow airports.

Today the school can accommodate up to 80 boarders in single and double rooms.

Other facilities offered include classrooms, large auditorium, drama hall, gym, tennis courts and playing fields. Catering is provided by catering firm The Brookwood Partnership, who offer a comprehensive food service.

Sports facilities include hockey and football pitches, netball, basketball and tennis courts, cricket nets, gymnasium, badminton and volleyball courts. We also take advantage of local all-weather pitches. Construction of a new Sports Hall and Design Studio is planned to commence is 2016.

Additional support

Pastoral care permeates throughout the school where every single pupil feels that they are part of our community. Tutors, boarding staff and pastoral leaders actively support the well- being of the pupils, offering advice when required. Pupils can discuss concerns with our resident School Nurse and there is also a School Counsellor who can be contacted for an appointment. There is a comprehensive transition and ‘buddy’ programme to assist new entrants and older pupils take on positions of responsibility to assist the younger members of the community through the House system or ‘Early Birds’ readers scheme in the Prep School. The pastoral care system at Beechwood is exceptional and was highlighted as a key strength in our most recent school inspection.

Learner success

Beechwood leavers are confident, articulate and ambitious.

At Beechwood pupils enjoy a well-rounded education with arts subjects valued as highly as other academic disciplines and we provide opportunities for pupils to explore a wide range of learning opportunities outside the classroom. Class sizes are small so that we can provide teaching that facilitates learning and inspires our pupils to explore new ideas so that they achieve their full potential.

At Beechwood we are very proud of our academic record and the progress made by all our pupils. We offer 24 A-Level subjects.

In 2015, our Sixth Form pupils achieved very good results with our top pupils achieving 2A* and 2A grades. The majority of leavers go on to study a range of courses at university e.g. Medicine at Bristol, Biochemistry at Imperial, Fine Art at Central Saint Martins, and Yacht Design and Manufacture at Southampton.
