Welcome to UTC@harbourside
UTC@harbourside is an exciting University Technical College in Newhaven for students from across Sussex. A state school especially designed for 14 to 18 year olds with a real interest in maths, science, engineering, computing and the environment.
We are a centre of excellence in science, technology engineering, mathematics and computing, enabling all learners to achieve their full potential in an advanced technologically driven society. Our students develop exceptional workplace skills through active engagement with industry professionals and the working environment, and use what they have learnt to make a real difference to the world in which we live.

Want to use your maths, science and computing skills to solve environmental or engineering challenges and make a real difference to the world?
Now you can learn these subjects in an exciting new way in the context of real life situations. Take GCSEs, A Levels and BTECs in subjects that employers and universities place a premium on. Learn from business and industry professionals, not just teachers, so you can leave college with skills and experience that employers value, as well as qualifications.
What makes us unique is our total connectivity with the real world; students do real projects set by employers, gain real experience of work and develop the real skills that they need to succeed.
We attract students from across Sussex, from Hastings in the East to Haywards Heath and beyond in the North, and Brighton and Worthing in the West and as a college we will be no larger than 600 students. We are therefore able to provide every student with a personalised curriculum in our area of specialism and know every one of our students as an individual.
Our exciting new campus is in the historic Grade II listed marine and carpenters’ workshops on the quayside in Newhaven. It combines conservation of the old with new buildings. We have excellent rail and bus links within two minutes walk.
Facilities include pioneering environmental engineering labs, engineering machine workshops, fluidics lab and welding labs, as well as control systems engineering, design technology, rapid prototyping, electronics, physics lab, computer science, and composites and adhesives labs. Finally on the top floor we have the super science lab and additional science labs, plus access to a habitat zone roof terrace. Across all three floors we have a range of specialist equipment from heavy engineering tools such as welding, milling and lathing, to light engineering and electronics, including 3D printers and CADCAM.
Our new building provides a real and virtual learning environment designed for the 21st century with the best engineering facilities in the region.
