Welcome to BOA

Birmingham Ormiston Academy is an independent state-funded 14–19 academy specialising in Creative, Digital and Performing Arts. BOA is sponsored by Ormiston Trust and Birmingham City University. 

The academy opened in September 2011 in a brand-new landmark building, located at the hub of the digital and creative industries in the West Midlands. It has superb facilities for academic, vocational and extra-curricular activities. BOA is one hundred percent selective based on aptitude within the specialisms and is unique in both its admissions and approach to education. The academy aims to be at the forefront of the development of the arts and creative industries.

Outstanding teaching coupled with constant support and guidance underpins the students’ personalised learning experiences. The curriculum is designed to develop the specific identified talents, gifts and potential of each student. Performance, production, creativity and excellence will be at the centre of their experiences.

Working in partnership with industry, our programmes of study are delivered by both excellent teachers and skilled professionals. Teaching is of the highest quality and students are able to apply their learning to the world of work.

Encompassing a full range of vocational, traditional and enrichment courses, our students have the opportunity to individualise their learning pathways. Gaining qualifications accepted by universities or career specific courses related to areas within the creative industry sector.

Together with our founding partners, Maverick TV and the BRIT School, we have numerous creative, business and industry partners. They offer high levels of support, investment, expertise and opportunities for both students and the academy.

Although located in the heart of Birmingham, BOA is a regional academy admitting students from Birmingham and the Local Authorities of Coventry, Dudley, Solihull, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton. Ten per cent of students are also admitted from the wider West Midlands.

Specialising in the arts, we will provide a dynamic and personalised learning pathway for each individual. It is our philosophy to unlock each student’s potential. As a regional academy of excellence for the teaching of creative, digital and performing arts, BOA combines the academic and vocational to provide unrivalled opportunities for its students to work alongside industry professionals.

Located at the hub of the creative and digital industries and adjacent to Birmingham City University’s city centre campus, the academy is able to draw on the experience of our education and industry partners. BOA has already developed a range of joint projects and programmes of study with the industries in which students would be likely to find work.

Learning at BOA

We aim to develop students academically, vocationally, socially and morally so that they leave the academy as independent, co-operative, responsible and creative young people who will have well-developed resilience and drive for learning within the arts and related technologies. We believe that these skills and qualities, coupled with relevant academic and vocational qualifications, prepare our students to go onto further and higher education and into the world of work able to positively contribute to society.
BOA will provide a range of unique learning experiences and opportunities which will prepare its students for both education and employment.
The curriculum is designed to create a learning pathway that meets the aspirations and talents of the individual and blends the traditional with both the professional and work-based vocational.
BOA is at the cutting edge of academic and vocational training in the creative, digital and performing arts. The curriculum offered is designed to enable students to develop higher order co-operative and collaborative skills relevant to working within the arts, creative and media industries.
There is a strong emphasis on personalised learning to include:
  • Individual Learning Plans for all with active student involvement in their creation, development and review 
  • Providing a range of experiences to match the preferences aspirations and needs of the individual 
  • Advanced technologies and ICT systems that provide 24-hour access via a virtual learning environment (VLE) 
  • A tutor / learning mentor to track progress and offer support, care and guidance
  • Extra support for students who need additional help to attain their individual target
Students are, of course, expected to work hard, develop new skills and be committed to the academy’s high standard of expectations

Additional support

We are committed to making facilities and learning accessible to all of our students. We recognise that learners progress at different speeds and in different ways. In order to respond to this, we identify each student’s individual need - including any barriers to learning, difficulties and disabilities - and then implement strategies to support independence and accelerate development. Progress is closely tracked and new provision quickly implemented. We also make sure that the views and feelings of students and parents guide the direction of all aspects of our work.
