Welcome to NPL Football Academy (Kidsgrove Athletic)

"We are proud to be leading the way again with the backing of the FA and the expertise of the guys behind the scheme. There are many academies and numerous youth leagues but the NPL Football Academy is the first to combine both.

"The NPL Football Academy will create a pool of player talent for clubs to draw upon and benefit from directly as well offering young people a fantastic path into the sporting industry through the qualifications and the real experience our clubs will be delivering.

"Not every student will go on to a career as a player and together with greater community engagement for the clubs, they'll also be playing a vital role in introducing the next generation of administrators and volunteers into sport and we hope, Non-League football."

About us

The NPL Football Academy in conjunction with the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League is the first in English football to launch a youth league and academy combining football with further education.

An initial pilot programme that begins in 2014/15 will see students aged 16-18 at five clubs - Burscough, Leek Town, Mickleover Sports, Radcliffe Borough and Romulus - before expanding to 12 teams in 2015/16, studying for a BTEC Level 3 in Sport on two year courses as well as working with FA/UEFA licensed coaches on a daily basis and competing in the Evo-Stik NPL Youth League and national competitions led by the FA Youth Cup.

The programme will run alongside existing youth set-ups at participating clubs, offering the best of each year’s intake the chance to play senior Non-League football at a level that has a fantastic reputation throughout football.

The initiative which will double in size the following 2015/16 season, will be regionalised and crucially, will also generate a welcome new income stream for clubs with students learning and training on site for 18-20 hours per week.

    • Hopes were high that Athletic would go one better during 2010/11, but after spending most of the season in the play-off positions, before fading badly in the final few weeks to finish seventh. Once more, though, the Staffordshire Senior Cup provided a highlight as Kidsgrove beat a Stoke City side to lift the trophy for a fourth time.

The downturn in fortunes continued, with off-the-field issues dominating proceedings and the club struggling to field a competitve team.  A comprehensive 4-0 reverse at local rivals Newcastle Town saw Grove finish in a relegation position at the end of the 2013/14 season, only to be handed a dramatic reprieve due to Worksop's resignation higher up the pyramid.  So Kidsgrove's proud record of never having been relegated continued for another year, but as we enter 2014/15, maintaining the club's status again looks like being a tough challenge.
