Welcome to Ely Caerau Schools and Community
There is so much on offer within the Ely and Caerau community to cater for the learning needs of all and to enable full and active engagement. The Federation schools working in partnership with Communities First passionately believe in maximising the potential of all and this website is created with that priority firmly in mind. We hope it will give you information where needed, to inspire you where possible and give the sense of belonging we all crave. It is for your children, your friends, your community, your schools and your future.
Glyn Derw High School is situated on the western edge of Cardiff, serving the large housing estate of Caerau and part of Ely.
Michaelston Community College is an 11-18 mixed community college serving the Ely area of Cardiff.
The two schools federated in September 2011 and are making great strides in improving standards and outcomes for pupils throughout the key stages. In September 2013, a new Sixth Form was opened, based on the Michaelston site and partnered with Cardiff and the Vale College and St David’s College. The Federation is committed to improving the quality of education for all members of the community.
Post-16 studies will enable you to select from a range of AS Level and Vocational courses. You can study three or four AS Level courses, or a number of Vocational courses which are each equivalent to an A Level or a combination of the two. You will also study the Welsh Baccalaureate which will contribute much to your personal development. The standard requirement to study at Post-16 is 5 GCSE subjects at grade A* - C or equivalent.
This is an exciting venture that brings together Glyn Derw High School, Michaelston Community College, St David's Catholic Sixth Form College, Cardiff and Vale College, Communities First and Cardiff Council to transform Post-16 opportunities for young people and adults in Ely and Caerau. The courses will be delivered at both Glyn Derw and Michaelston and will also utilise other facilities to ensure that our students have proper access to a comprehensive curriculum.
Your pastoral programme will have two distinct yet integrated components. This includes personal tutor support and the Welsh Baccalaureate. Throughout these programmes you will acquire the skills, knowledge and behaviours to become successful.
Your personal tutor will be responsible for helping you settle into the Sixth Form and helping you make the most of your time whist studying. Regular progress checks and setting of goals will take place and will form a key part of the pastoral programme.
At the Ely and Caerau Sixth Form we recognise that our students come to us with all sorts of gifts and talents.
Regardless of past achievements and regardless of personal circumstances, though, every student that joins our Sixth Form becomes a valued member of the community. This means that you will receive all the support we can give as you go about your study, as well as enjoying all the quality teaching and learning that we aim to provide.
By studying with the Ely and Caerau Sixth Form you will have access to study support, careers and university guidance, and personal tutoring. This is in addition to the friendships you will make and the ideas you will discover as you take up the challenge of learning at a new and exciting level.
