Welcome to Wigston College
Our commitment to you as a student centres upon ensuring that you follow the courses that suit your skills and abilities. We have developed a number of pathways which capture your strengths and interests and prepare you for your next steps. Choosing to study at Wigston College for your Post 16 education has significant benefits. The Sixth Form is large enough to offer a wide variety of courses but small enough to provide you with a network of support required to make the successful adjustment from GCSE to A level.
Our aim is to create a programme of study which reflects your achievements, stretches your capabilities and helps establish your ambitions for the future. Our approach to study at Post 16 is to guide you towards a pathway which best suits your interests but also plays to your strengths in terms of your particular learning and assessment style. We are experienced in providing a challenging Sixth Form education and we have outstanding partnerships with other universities and employers throughout Leicestershire and beyond to ensure your needs are met.
Wigston College is a specialist Sixth Form Learning Centre. Facilities, teaching and support are focused on A Levels and other Level 3 courses. Students thrive in a learning environment solely focused on advanced level studies, whilst benefitting from the close links with the Wigston Academy, which allows us to offer an extended range of enrichment and volunteering opportunities.
Sixth Form students are able to access a range of study spaces throughout the college day. Independent study can take place in The Hub and The Study Room and the Common Room is open all day for Sixth Form students to use as an informal study and social area. Many departments provide independent study space for Sixth Form students in subject classrooms and in addition to timetabled teaching lessons, staff provide one-to-one support, small group sessions and advice and feedback via email.
We strive hard to provide advice, support and guidance to students across the Sixth Form through high quality teaching, a well resourced environment and a strong sense of community spirit. We have high aspirations for all our students and want them to achieve their best.
Students meet with their group tutor every morning and attend briefings for the Sixth Form each week. There is an opportunity to meet with subject staff twice a year at Parent Evening, but we actively encourage good communication between staff and parents/carers on a regular basis.
At the start of the year, parents/carers and students are invited to a Bridge The Gap event to support learners with the transition between GCSE and A level. We also have a Student Manager and Student Services available to provide advice and guidance.
Approximately 70% of students each year head off to university; we currently have students studying Medicine, Law, and at some of the top univeristies across the country. We ask students early on which route they wish to pursue -university or employment//apprenticeship- and provide targeted support so they are well-informed about the opportunities available.
Our students also secure places at prestigious performing arts colleges reinforcing the College's reputation as a top performing arts educator.
