Welcome to the Online Prospectus for Oakfield Park School, where a recent Ofsted report said students "make exceptional progress in learning and personal development." Ofsted has classed our school as "outstanding" and the students describe it as "super", "fantastic" and "lovely".
Oakfield Park School is an LA maintained school providing high class education for young people aged 11-19 years who have severe or profound and multiple learning difficulties. Many of our pupils have additional complex needs including ASC, sensory impairment, challenging behavior and physical difficulties.
Pupils attend from across the Wakefield Metropolitan District.
All pupils attending Oakfield Park School have a Statement of Special Educational Need. The school offers small classes and a variety of teaching approaches delivered by highly trained staff. Every pupil has an Individual Education Plan drawn up in consultation with parents/carers that identifies priorities for each term.
The school is well equipped providing excellent accommodation for pupils with disabilities including those with physical and complex needs. It is a single storey construction allowing access for wheelchairs.
Specialist resources include a hydrotherapy pool, sensory garden, a light sensory room, soft play area and a Post 16 flat.
All classrooms are equipped with a networked computer with broadband connection to the Internet. Further ICT resources are provided according to the needs of the pupils and include interactive whiteboards, touchscreens, switches and Intellikey keyboards.
Pupils are taught in small class groups staffed by a teacher and at least two teaching assistants.
Two school nurses administer prescribed medication in accordance with the individual`s drug regime, and implement the necessary clinical skills needed for each individual pupil. They attend to and deal with medical emergencies, and act in an advisory capacity to parents, carers and professionals involved with a pupil`s package of care.
Pupils at Oakfield Park School are supported by a team of professionals who complement the school staff. The Paediatric Therapy Team includes physiotherapists and occupational therapists who visit the school regularly and provide treatment according to priority need across the school.
Educational Psychologists make regular visits to the school to discuss and assess pupils, and to recommend teaching strategies to the school staff.
Pupils also receive support from speech and language therapists, and teachers for the Hearing Impaired and Visually Impaired.
Each year student bank credits working towards a Diploma in ASDAN. This year, students at Oakfield Park are a part of a pilot curriculum where students have banked their credits. Taking in account this is the first year, pupils leaving this year (16 pupils) have all attained enough credits to gain an Award in ASDAN.
Oakfield Park School is the first school in West Yorkshire to offer the new Entry 1 Qualification in Personal Progress. Students are also working on PSD units at Entry Level 1 and next year Entry Level 2 in ASDAN.
