Welcome to Huddersfield Grammar School

Huddersfield Grammar School is a thriving school with a great sense of community and a genuine care for all of the pupils. The School successfully provides young people from ages 3 to 16 years with a balanced, challenging and exciting educational environment in which every child can realise their individual aspirations and potential.

At Huddersfield Grammar School we pride ourselves on our cult...ure of care and excellence. We want our pupils to realise their full academic potential, to become intellectually and culturally curious and adventurous, and to feel secure and confident within themselves and in society.

We place considerable emphasis on providing a high standard of pastoral care ensuring that each child receives the individual support and attention they need. We also seek to encourage the development of spiritual and moral values, self-discipline, integrity, responsibility and respect for each other. We work towards these goals in close partnership with parents and the wider community.

At Huddersfield Grammar School we strive for high academic standards, and the results achieved in public examinations are impressive. However, we are also concerned with education in its broader sense, and extra-curricular activities that include art, music, drama and sport are all important to us in recognising the talent and potential in each of our pupils.

Huddersfield Grammar School is a great place to learn. To allow you to really appreciate and experience what our school can offer I invite you to visit this inspiring, exciting and developing school. I would relish the opportunity to meet with you.

Best Wishes

About us

Huddersfield Grammar School is an inspiring, exciting and developing school. Young people from ages 3 to 16 years are provided with a challenging and enjoyable educational experience.

Mission
The main aim of Huddersfield Grammar is to provide all children, irrespective of race, religion, gender or background the opportunity to be part of a caring, challenging and supportive environment where their full potential may be realised.

The School provides a high quality education for children age 3 to 16 years, as part of a continuing development process which encourages children to achieve their maximum potential, prepares them academically, socially and morally for the next stage of their lives.

We believe that education should be:
• Accessible, giving every child many opportunities to use their unique talents to achieve succes
• Enjoyable and stimulating
• Well ordered, but with opportunity for self-expression

We aim to encourage and foster in children:
• Respect and care for each other and the wider world in which they live
• The building of a bond of trust and respect with those who teach them
• The laying down of a foundation for a balanced future life
• A rounded and thoughtful approach to all situations they meet.

A strength of the school is the ability to offer the security of uninterrupted education. Children enter at a variety of stages and ages, most commonly at age 3 into Pre-Preparatory School, age 7 into Preparatory School or age 11 into Senior School GCSE courses.

However, possibilities exist for entry at all ages depending on the availability of places. We make every effort to ensure a smooth transition so that each individual is able to integrate both socially and academically.

Facilities available

Core Subjects are English and Mathematics, but we also expect students to take at least one science subject and a modern foreign language. Biology, Chemistry and Physics are taught separately and it is a requirement that at least one of the three be taken at GCSE level.

Each subject has its own well-equipped laboratory and experienced specialist staff supported by a laboratory technician. This ensures that a wide range of practical work is undertaken throughout the course. We feel it is essential that the sciences are studied separately in order to provide a sound basis for A-level studies.

French is taught from Year 2 and Spanish from Year 6. It is a requirement that at least one language is taken to GCSE level. Emphasis is placed on developing confidence in oral and written skills. This is underlined by all our specialist language teachers who communicate mainly in the language studied.

Information Technologyis of major importance and the students learn, from an early age, how to use the extensive software packages which are available in our IT Suites. Although a GCSE subject in its own right, Information Computer Technology and almost unlimited, screened Internet access is used throughout the school as a learning tool.

Music and Drama combine to provide opportunities for students interested in singing in a choir, playing a musical instrument, dancing or acting, to take part in a wide variety of music and dramatic performances. Fine Art plays an important part within the curriculum and many areas of the school are enhanced by the work of the students in a range of media. The teachers encourage a general appreciation and understanding of a wide variety of the arts among all pupils as well as nurturing the specially gifted. All three subjects are offered at GCSE.

The following subjects are also offered at GCSE - English Literature, History, Geography, Physical Education and Religious Education. All of these subjects combine to form a well-balanced curriculum for our students. Specialist staff are enthusiastic and every effort is made to present the subjects in an enjoyable and accessible way.

A close working relationship between school and home is essential as the student’s educational welfare is seen as a joint responsibility.

Learner success

Our ongoing strong GCSE results in 2012 (100% 5 A* to C grades), with 91% in 2013 with 100% in mathematics reflects the hard work of both staff and students. Success can, of course, be measured in the examination successes and the school is very proud of the young people who have achieved outstanding results, but school life is more than just results the individual is just as important.
