The ‘top 10’ things you need to know about college life.
- It's more like being at university because you don't have the restrictions of school. You'll be treated like an adult.
- There are no bells - you are expected to manage your own time.
- There's no standard lunch hour. The snack bars are open all day so you can grab something to eat whenever you want.
- There's no uniform. Though for some courses, like catering, you'll wear the clothing you would in industry.
- You will have free time during the day for study. You can go to the library and of IT centre. If you need time to relax with your friends, head to the Students' Union lounge or go into town, just five minutes walk away.
- When you study at college you study in an adult atmosphere that requires self-discipline and motivation. You're expected to be responsible and think for yourself.
- It's more like a job than school and you'll spend time in industry you want to work in. Most courses at Kirklees College involve a work placement. You may get to work for multi-national companies, at major sporting or cultural events or even abroad.
- College day doesn't always start at 9am and finish at 3.30pm.
- Many courses include talks from experts, day trips and residentials (sometimes abroad) to give you a better insight into and understanding of your chosen career.
- Although you have a certain amount of freedom your course comes first. Your personal tutor will keep a close check on your progress. If you are struggling to organise yourself or your studies they will be there to support you. They will do everything possible to help you achieve your qualification.
