Welcome to Ossett Academy and Sixth Form College

On behalf of students, staff and governors, I am delighted to be able to welcome you to Ossett Academy and Sixth Form College.

The academy has gained a reputation for excellence that is best evidenced in the outcomes that students achieve across all aspects of academy life. Our strong tradition of success is built on a firm foundation of strong pastoral care, ensuring a climate for learning that is calm, well-ordered and secure, and focused on celebrating every achievement and academic success.

Academic excellence, whilst important, is only one part of our story, with a strong tradition of student achievement, celebrated across a wide range of curriculum and enrichment activities in sport, performing and creative arts. There really is an explosion of opportunity at the academy, with students regularly participating in educational visits to complement their work across the curriculum. In addition, to ensure strong personal and social development, all students are also able to participate in a wide range of residential experiences, both within the UK and abroad.

The development of our community is an extremely important feature of our work, and a key priority is to ensure that we have very positive relationships with parents and carers in order to fully support the learning of all young people.

Most recently we have joined together with Horbury Academy, Horbury Primary Academy and Middletown Primary Academy to form the Accord Multi Academy Trust.  This is an exciting development for the Academy and the vision of our equal partnership is that the Accord Multi Academy Trust will enhance both our practice and knowledge of learning across primary and secondary education, whilst also providing access for students and staff to an even better range of opportunities in order to achieve excellence.

Partnership and collaboration is an important aspect of our on-going development and we continue to play a key role alongside our primary pyramid as a member of the Education Ossett Community Trust (EOCT), striving to provide world-class opportunities for the community of Ossett, and supporting young people aged 3 to 18 to develop a lifelong passion for learning, across a range of experiences.

I am extremely proud to lead Ossett Academy and Sixth Form College and to work alongside such a talented body of students and staff, who are fully committed to working as a team. This really is a fantastic place with unlimited potential, and I am certain that when you visit, you will undoubtedly be impressed. However, don’t just rely on my opinion and take a look at the welcome video below from our students.

Student Care

We promote a safe and caring environment where students look after one another. This is done through the creation of a very positive ethos. Students and staff enjoy positive working relationships in a happy environment. We have a very supportive team of staff whose role is to ensure the welfare of our students, including Form Tutors, Learning Leaders, Achievement Officers, Learning Mentors and other specialist staff. Senior students also operate drop-in sessions for those students who are having minor issues that they would rather discuss initially with another student. We have an excellent track record of supporting students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities and employ a number of support staff who have undertaken training in a variety of areas of learning support. We are also very lucky to have a nurture room which provides intensive bespoke support to students who have significant emotional needs.

Behaviour and Discipline

Many parents state their reason for choosing Ossett Academy for their children is the high standards of behaviour that are expected of all of our students. We have firm but fair policies and procedures to ensure that all of our students behave in a respectful and tolerant way, to staff, other students and members of the local community. Visitors constantly comment on the fantastic way that students conduct themselves around the building and we always receive excellent feedback from trip facilitators when our students are out on educational visits.

Careers and Post 16 pathways

We are known regionally for our excellent careers provision for our students; we have two full-time Careers Advisors who work with our students from Year 7 onwards to ensure that they have high aspirations throughout their school career, at post 16 and beyond.

We provide one to one discussions, assemblies, careers fairs and have outside speakers who focus students on the world of work, all aiming to engage our students in their chosen career paths. Our track record of students obtaining employment and training is the highest within the Wakefield Authority and a large number of our students go on to their first choice University.

Extra-Curricular

The opportunities are not only in the curriculum, we provide a very wide range of experiences in the Arts, Sport and through exciting educational visits.

We believe that a busy student is a successful student and to support this, offer a large number of extra-curricular activities, both at lunchtime and after school. These are wide ranging and include Sports, Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Photography, IT clubs, film clubs and many others, too numerous to mention.

We also have a fully stocked Learning Resources Centre which has books, reference materials and a number of computers for students to use to support their learning. For Gifted and Talented students, our Areti programme provides additional stretch and challenge. We also operate a number of educational visits throughout the year, including residential trips abroad, to widen the student experience and develop their cultural awareness.

Nurturing well-rounded individuals

Students excel at Ossett Academy because we get them to believe in themselves. This encourages all students to realise their potential and achieve to the best of their ability. We also believe in promoting self-confidence to give young people the courage to accept new challenges. Finally, we constantly aim to develop self-aware and tolerant young people who will be responsible members of the local, national and international communities with a desire to promote equality and respect for other people and their environments.
